The Guy on the Bicycle

On Monday afternoon, I met "The Guy on the Bicycle". I wondered who in their right mind would actually come to a Backpackers Lodge on a bicycle?!? Then I started speaking to him, and this is what he said:

  • He realised he needed to make a change when both his parents passed away from cancer without ever owning a passport
  • He needed to be happy, he told me that the world is too "wage" conscious, people are working so hard to get a better car, a better house, and all the latest gadgets, only to spend most of their lives working for these "toys", that they cannot enjoy it
  • He told me that we define our own happiness, only we can decide who and what makes us happy
  • He left his home in London and has been travelling for one and a half years and is now on his way to Cape Town

This is the lessons I learnt from him:

  • The simple things in life should make us happy
  • Decide on what makes you happy and just do it
  • Life is too short to waste time and be un-happy, start it now without any delays
  • Life is meant to be "lived" and not "worked"
  • Reduce the material possessions and live simply
  • No matter what material possession you have, it cannot go with you
  • Never under-estimate the lovely taste of a simple meal
  • Do not complicate your lives
